Recently, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society received an amazing donation of five photo albums full of different can labels from the Canadian Fishing Company from the family of William Branter. Mr. Branter worked for Canfisco for his entire 50 year career, starting by sweeping floors at Home Plant in Vancouver when he was still in high school, and eventually working his way up to Distribution and Transportation Manager. He retired in 1990 after working for the company for 50 years.

The collection of approximately 500 labels includes a wide variety of seafood which was destined for many different markets around the world.  Among the labels are various images of Sammy the Salmon, the cartoon salmon created by the Disney Studios for Canadian Fishing Company in the 1940’s.  Sammy is often seen on cans of salmon but he was also used on many other types of canned seafood produced by Canfisco.  Here is one example showing a label for a can of tuna from the 1970’s.  This is just a peek at the amazing donation; stay tuned for more posts about some of the fabulous finds from this great collection of can labels!
