Submitted by Heritage Interpreter, Lina K.
Did you know that Steveston is home to one of the biggest dragon boat festivals in British Columbia? On Saturday, August 25th, over 80 dragon boat teams will be arrive at Imperial Landing at sunrise to prepare for a full day of intense races against other paddlers. Each team, composed of 22 people, will go on the boat and speed to the finish line. Expect to hear lots of water splashing and drumming! Races will be happening all day from 8am to 5pm. Admission is free.
Take time to explore the Steveston boardwalk during your visit and participate in the festivities too! Starting at 10am, you can explore Britannia Shipyards and enjoy takeout from the food trucks while watching performances by local artists. There will also be lots of activities and arts & crafts stations for children to enjoy.
Stick around until the evening for the medal ceremonies starting at 5pm! The winning junior, adult, senior and women’s teams will all stand up on stage to receive bright gold, silver and bronze medals.
Visit Steveston Dragon Boat Festival’s website for schedules of the events during the day and a list of vendors and entertainers. This festival will not only celebrate the sport but bring together people of various ages and cultures to engage with Chinese culture, which dragon boating originally came from.
