Steveston’s Salmon Festival Parade
Submitted by Abigail, Heritage Interpreter
This Canada Day, two interpreters (myself and Julia) had the opportunity to be in the Steveston Salmon Festival parade representing the Cannery. It was a fantastic day of sunshine, waving, handing out swag, and just being generally joyous. The days leading up to the parade were just as sunny, but involved significantly less waving, and much more ‘CD fish’ making. “What on earth is a ‘CD fish’?” you ask. Well, this was a brilliant idea from our Special Events Coordinator Patricia, who came up with the plan to turn the dozens of old CD’s in storage at the Cannery into cute reflective fish which were glued onto sea green and ocean blue ‘hula’ skirts that we wore in the parade.
Dressed in our Canada Day best we arrived at the marshalling area to discover that we were group #19 in the parade…so close to the front! Our walk down the busy streets of Steveston took forty-five minutes, and in what seemed like no time at all we were finished the parade route and on our way back to the Cannery, weaving our way through the throngs of people gathered in the village. All in all it was a great day!
