Behind-the-scenes Tours for Doors Open Richmond
Canneries and cats have a long history together. Canneries were built over the water and had wide gaps in the planks to let the air circulate and keep the fish cool. The buildings were not built to be airtight or, for that matter, rodent proof, so canneries kept a few cats around to keep the mice away. This is the idea behind The Cannery Cat’s Collection, a temporary exhibit that showcases the Gulf of Georgia Cannery’s 125th anniversary through the eyes of a fairy-tale cat who has seen it all. The exhibit is also the inspiration for our annual behind-the-scenes tours for Doors Open Richmond on June 1 and 2.
This year our Doors Open tours will retrace the steps of the extraordinarily long-lived Cannery Cat. The tours will include a visit to The Cannery Cat’s Collection exhibit before exploring some of the mythical cat’s favourite haunts in areas of the cannery not usually accessible to the public. The tour will also include a special visit to the Canfisco net loft next door.
These indoor/outdoor tours are designed for adults and youth (not children) and are not wheelchair accessible. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Register now by calling 604-664-9009. Tours will run at 10:30 and 2:30 on Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2 only. Outside of these tours, regular admission rates apply.
