Zombie Preparedness at the Cannery
In the lead-up to one of the spookiest nights of the year, the Collections department at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery has a few hints to offer in the form of a handy series on surviving a zombie apocalypse.
Don’t be caught unawares and unprepared in the event of a zombie apocalypse! The Cannery is a great place to find the items you will need to weather an international undead crisis in a historically appropriate style. As it turns out, West Coast fishermen were very well prepared to deal with that sort of thing in the 20th century.
The most important thing you can do for yourself in an undead invasion is to find a safe hideout. Ideally, it should be well hidden and well protected against non-living invaders. Look for an inaccessible spot (for instance, on a boat)!
The first couple of artefacts in our Zombie Apocalypse series are all about hunkering down and surviving. People tend to forget the basic human needs in the event of undead hysteria. Thankfully, we have an emergency rations tin and a hurricane lantern from decades gone by. The emergency rations tin even has biscuits still inside it! They may have passed their expiry date, but who is going to be picky during a zombie apocalypse?
When the inevitable day comes, you will be patting yourself on the back for having planned ahead.
Next in our series: arm yourself!
These artefacts have been rediscovered as part of the 2013 Parks Canada Collections Rationalization Project.
