Photo of the Week

This week, I have some exciting new to report in addition to our photo of the week: you can now see some of the photos which the digitization team has been hard at work scanning, before their online debut this fall! A digital photo frame has been installed in the Cannery’s entryway which rotates through approximately sixty of our historic photographs – the photos will be changing throughout the summer as more are scanned. Drop by and see it!

And, speaking of photos, don’t forget that we are accepting entries for Fishing the West Coast 2010 until August 6, 2010. Get your entries in today!

And now, for this week’s Photo of the Week:

G003.047.004L

Photo of the Week: June 23

A photograph of an unidentified passenger vessel docked in Namu, BC sometime from 1953-1955. Namu was the site of a large year-round cannery and reduction plant, owned by B.C. Packers. The signs on the building in the background read “Clover Leaf Salmon” and “Rupert Brand,” which were B.C. Packers’ signature brands. Passenger vessels such as this one were considered ‘lifelines,’ as they carried groceries, dry goods, industrial cargo, passengers, and mail to the isolated mining, logging and fishing communities along the B.C. coast. This photograph is part of the Vernon Rowley Collection. It is a black and white photograph measuring 3.5 X 2.5 inches.

If you can tell us the name of the vessel, or provide any other information, please either post a comment or email Rachel.
