Cannery Store Feature: Ron Hyde’s The Sockeye Special

Sockeye Special002

Ron Hyde, a writer and historian specializing in Richmond and BC history, has published The Sockeye Special: the story of the Steveston tram and early Lulu Island.

Hyde’s book outlines how integral the Steveston tram was to Lulu Island. The tram line, which operated from 1905 to 1958 between Vancouver and Steveston, was imperative for transporting Cannery workers to and from Steveston, leisure seekers to and from Lulu Island, and played a special role in the dairy industry. To learn more about this unique and important part of Steveston’s transportation and cultural history, or to get your hands on a copy of your own, please come by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Store today.
