This bright and cheery poster which was used during World War II to inspire Canadians to plant backyard gardens to help with the supply of fresh vegetables for their families. Just look at those happy carrots and onions! 1940s Victory Garden how-to videos on YouTube are also designed to make gardening seem like fun. They often feature children who are excited to plant the seeds and watch them grow.

Sixty-five years later, backyard or allotment gardens are still popular as people yearn to become more connected to where their food comes from.

At the next Cannery Farmers’ Market on Sunday February 12, join us for our “Get Growing” event, where you’ll be able to meet local gardening community groups to learn all about how to grow your own food!

10am to 3pm: The Master Gardeners will be joining us to chat and offer advice about year-round gardening

10am to 3pm: Amy Norgaard from the Richmond Food Security Society will be available to talk about gardening with you.  She will be bringing the Community Seed Library with her to inspire you to try growing new (or old) varieties, and to start planning your garden for success.

…and, just in time for Valentine’s Day, free packets of “Peas Be Mine” pea seeds will be handed out to visitors, while supplies last.
