BC aquaculture now falls under federal jurisdiction

Federal Fisheries Minister Gail Shea announced on Friday that the federal government would be taking over control of BC’s aquaculture industry.  “The new regulatory regime will provide the industry with operational certainty, ensure the public knows the environment will be protected and provides the most efficient and effective management regime possible,” Shea announced.  This change was triggered by the lawsuit launched by multiple environmental groups critical of the salmon farm industry.

“The Ministry of Agriculture will continue as the lead provincial agency for the strategic development of the aquaculture industry in British Columbia,” [B.C. Agriculture and Lands Minister Ben Stewart] told reporters.
