Bella Bella DFO Office Occupied in Herring Fishery Protest

The CBC reports that the Heiltsuk nation are occupying the office of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans near Bella Bella to protest the opening of the herring roe fishery. Meetings between the Heiltsuk and federal officials last week proved inconclusive and, consequently, 50 members of the nation  set up to protest both outside and inside the office on Sunday. The Heiltsuk feel they have exhausted all means of negotiation with the DFO and their top priority is to protect the herring from a gill net opening following the recent seine opening.
