On Saturday, The Richmond Review released its “The Best of Richmond 2010” issue, and I was thrilled to see that the Gulf of Georgia Cannery had been voted #1 in the Heritage Building category! Over the years, the Cannery has had many incarnations, including a salmon cannery, a herring reduction plant, and a netloft. We are excited that our current incarnation as a National Historic Site is so popular, and would like to thank everyone who voted for us! We also earned special mention for “Best Name for a Weekend Event” for Salmon Stomp, our music festival which will be taking place again this year on August 8. Stay tuned for more details!

Second place in the category went to London Heritage Farm, and third place to Steveston Post Office, which earned special mention as the Best Prefab Building. We would also like to extend our congratulations to the Cannery Society’s Treasurer, Jim Kojima, who got voted #2 in the best Volunteer category!

One thing I couldn’t help but notice about the special issue was the number of local Steveston businesses which earned spots on the list. It’s wonderful to see that our corner of Richmond, and its businesses, is so well known and important to the city as a whole. Come on down to the Village and see what the buzz is about! Despite this importance, Steveston Village earned the #2 spot on the list for Endangered Piece of Richmond History. I’m not sure what this distinction means exactly – whether the history of the village is being lost, or the village itself is endangered – but if you’re worried that you don’t know enough about Steveston, then we have just the solution for you!

This summer we are bringing back our Strolling Through Steveston Walking Tour. This hour-long tour of Steveston Village is run in conjunction with Steveston Museum, and gives locals and visitors alike the history of this fascinating village – you may be surprised what you learn! It will be open to the public on a regular basis in the summer; stay tuned for exact times and dates.
