Family Day in Richmond: February 21

2000.001.003.159 Yamamura Family Collection

Five of Canada’s provinces consider today, ‘Family Day’, a statutory holiday: Manitoba calls it Louis Riel Day, PEI has named it Islander Day. And Richmond’s Mayor, Malcolm Brodie, recognizes the importance of ‘Family Day’ in support of Touchstone‘s Eating Together Week. While this day in Richmond is not considered a statutory holiday (on the radio one can hear BC’s public arguing for it in the future), it does mark the beginning of events taking place all week across Richmond, in honor of families eating together.

If you didn’t see our previous post about Eating Together, there are many ways in which families can take part in events such as community dinners, free cooking classes, and submit recipes to win prizes. Refer to the Eating Together website to find out ways in which your family can participate.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery will be handing out recipe cards at the Steveston Farmer’s Market this Sunday the 27th. In addition, Cannery staff and friends have contributed their own recipes – ones that held great family significance to them – to be posted on our blog each day of Eating Together Week. These recipes are brought to you from our families to yours; we hope you too can share and enjoy them.
