It has been a banner year for sockeye salmon in 2010 with 34 million fish migrating up the Fraser River. Yet despite the fact there are still 8 to 10 million fish making their way up the river, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans has declared the end of the season this week.

Along with the tail end of the sockeye run, 30 000 endangered coho salmon are set to spawn along the Fraser River between now and November. Conservationist Marc Angelo notes in a CTV News article that “maintaining a diversity of species throughout the watershed promotes a healthy system where survival is high for all salmon.” By this logic, DFO wants to prevent coho becoming bycatch by closing salmon fishing all together.

The closure will stretch from the mouth of the Fraser River to Mission, B.C. on Tuesday. It will come into effect from Mission to Hope, B.C. on Thursday and the remainder of the river heading upstream will shut on Saturday. . . [read full article]
