Follow the Herring?

Indeed – and that’s exactly what UK residents and visitors have been invited to do. Pioneering at Newcastle’s Customs House arts centre is a multimedia tour down the east coast of the country to put a spotlight on the maritime heritage of fishing communities.

The idea comes from the “herring lassies”, women who followed the herring fishing fleets along the coast to meet them their ports of call. These ladies then gutted, salted and barreled the catch, ready for worldwide export.

The tour begins in Musselburgh on May 5th and continues south to conclude at Hastings on August 2nd. If you haven’t made holiday plans yet, this one takes the (fish)cake for originality!
