Going once, going…to the highest bidder?

Vancouver 24 Hours reports that independent B.C. salmon fishermen and members of the United Fishermen and Allied Workers’ Union (UFAWU) are protesting proposed changes to B.C.’s fishery licensing. Under new regulations proposed by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), regulations could change from a first-come, first-serve¬† basis for the commercial season to a cap on the number of fish caught by each license holder.

Fishermen fear that companies who have the funds to buy up the quotas will do so, to the detriment of the independent fisherman. The DFO, meanwhile, states that their intention is to enhance the sustainability of Pacific Salmon and to increase the resilience of commercial salmon fisheries.
