Hoping Cohen Favours Conservation

Ecological groups such as the Watershed Watch Salmon Society are anxiously awaiting the insights revealled by the Cohen Commission when the inquiry resumes at the end of the month.  The organization’s executive director, Craig Orr, “claims Fisheries and Oceans Canada is struggling to implement its conservation-focused wild-salmon policy” with lack of funding being a primary concern. He hopes the federal inquiry will generate more solutions to protect the salmon than past sockeye reviews.

The Cohen Commission of Inquiry into the Decline of Sockeye Salmon in the Fraser River has adjourned while lawyers sort through a deluge of documents. It is scheduled to resume on November 29 with a hearing on wild-salmon policy. …[read full article]
