Millions of Fraser River sockeye missing

An article in today’s Globe and Mail raises alarm bells about this year’s surprisingly low run of Fraser River sockeye. The mystery of missing sockeye is perplexing, as early predictions in June indicated that there would be a large run this year. Although it seems that the missing salmon have died at some point during migration, it is not entirely clear what the cause was.Ā  In any case, this year’s poor run means that the Fraser River sockeye salmon fishery will remain closed.

Between 10.6 million and 13 million sockeye were expected to return to the Fraser this summer. But the official count is now just 1.7 million, according to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Where the nine to 11 million missing fish went remains a mystery. … [read full article]
