A new plaque commemorating the families of B.C. Nikkei (Japanese Canadian) fishermen and their contributions to the Nikkei Fishermen’s Legacy Challenge, was unveiled on Saturday May 24 at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site.

The plaque will be on permanent display in the front lobby of the Cannery, to recognize the generous donation made by the Nikkei Fishermen’s Legacy Challenge to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, for our efforts to preserve the history of the Nikkei in Canada’s West Coast fishing industry.

Many family members of the  fishermen commemorated on the plaque, were present for the unveiling ceremony, which was followed by a special award to Steveston resident Mr. Toshio Murao.  The Consul General of Japan, Seiji Okada, presented a Certificate of Commendation to Mr. Murao, for his “distinguished service in contributing to the deepening of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Canada”.
