Nishga Girl slated to return
We first blogged about the Canadian Museum of Civilization’s decision to remove the Nishga Girl here, when news of its removal elicited some very strong responses from a number of stakeholders.
Now, after consultations with the Japanese Canadian and Nisga’a communities, the decision has been reversed and the Nishga Girl is slated to return to the museum’s exhibits galleries next year.
In a news release announcing the decision Wednesday, [museum president and CEO] Mark O’Neill said he concluded the story of the Nishga Girl “will continue to be told in the new Canadian history hall, but in the broader context of the histories of the Nisga’a and the Japanese-Canadian communities.”
As well as illustrating the role the salmon industry played in the development of the West Coast, the Nishga Girl “also tells the moving story of how two communities helped each other during difficult episodes in our history,” O’Neill said.
