Overwaitea Given Top Marks

Greenpeace released its second annual report on sustainable seafood on Wednesday and only one supermarket chain was given a passing grade, according to an article in the Vancouver Sun. In Taking Stock: Ranking Supermarkets on Seafood Sustainability, Overwaitea Foods received 51 percent, putting it just into the passing category. The other seven chains ranked by the group failed.

The report notes that all eight chains sell some redlisted seafood, but Overwaitea received a higher grade due to its commitment to work with Seachoice to develop a sustainable policy with regards to which seafood it will sell.

Loblaw, which ranked second at 41 percent, lags behind due to its reliance on Marine Stewardship Council certifications which are not recognized by Greenpeace. Greenpeace Oceans campaigner Sarah King noted that the council is debating whether to certify the BC Sockeye fishery as sustainable, despite the pending inquiry into the collapse of the run.

“Supermarkets have stopped selling imperilled species such as shark, skates and bluefin tuna, which are not big sellers,” said Beth Hunter, Greenpeace oceans campaign coordinator. “Now retailers need to focus on no longer selling fish that may be consumer favourites, but are still destructively fished or farmed.”…[read full article]
