Although numbers are not what they were last year, the commercial sockeye fishery will be open on the Fraser River, the Gulf of Georgia, and the southern tip of Vancouver Island on Thursday for 3 hours. While 30 million fish will not be returning to the Fraser to spawn, an approximation of 3 million will return this year. Given the river levels are so high, due to this year’s late snow melt, the salmon will be harder to catch as they have a greater volume of water to continue upstream with, allowing them to more easily avoid the nets.
