Despite a pending federal inquiry into why the 2009 Fraser River Sockeye run fell nine million fish short of what was expected, an international organization is set to declare the industry sustainable.

The Marine Stewardship Council, based out of England, is just weeks away from giving its seal of approval and environmental groups are very concerned. However, some researchers suggest that the decision may actually help the fish by providing sustainability guidelines which must be followed by the DFO.

MSC’s announcement comes just a few months after Fraser River sockeye returns collapsed from an expected 10 million fish to around one million. In November, Prime Minister Stephen Harper called a federal inquiry into the collapse.
