2009 Richmond-Delta Regional Heritage Fair
May 2nd marked the closing ceremonies of the 7th Annual Richmond-Delta Regional Heritage Fair. Judges were tasked with marking 55 projects from Richmond and Delta schools ranging from Grade 3 to Grade 10.
Among the winners was Nicholas Laviolette, Gr. 4 student from Gilmore Elementary, whose project was entitled “History of Steveston & Gulf of Georgia Cannery.”
Nicholas enthusiastically talked about creating a model of Steveston village and the photographs he took while touring the Cannery. Also on display was the transcript of an interview with Jim Kojima. There were a variety of photographs and descriptions of Steveston in its heyday as a thriving fishing village. Among the sources referenced was My Monster Cannery by Nat McHaffie. Nicholas illustrated a solid understanding of the history of Steveston and the Gulf of Georgia Cannery.
He aptly deserved the Historic Places Award that was presented to him by Linda Reid, M.L.A. Congratulations, Nicholas!
