Walking Tours in Steveston
Submitted by Heritage Interpreter Lina K.
The sun is out, meaning it is the perfect time to go for a stroll in Steveston! Participate in one of the various walking tours to learn more about the village, whether you’re a history nerd or a Once Upon a Time fan.
For history nerds, there will be hour-long tours provided at 1pm and 3pm on Saturdays starting at the Steveston Museum which will allow you to learn of the village’s beginnings or its suspicious affairs. Every Saturday this month, Hugh McRoberts Secondary students will be acting out skits in Steveston Alive! Walking Tour Vignettes, presented by the Steveston Historical Society and Steveston Museum. You can learn more about the tours and book them here.
Craving for more history? Then get your smartphone ready and follow a self-guided Nikkei Stories tour! There are ten historically significant locations in the village where you can scan a QR code and watch a short video about Japanese-Canadian residents from their arrival as immigrants to their return after the internment period during WWII. One of the Nikkei Stories panels can be found in front of the Cannery. Start the tour on First Avenue and Moncton Street at the building that was used by the Japanese Fishermen’s Benevolent Society.
For Once Upon a Time fans, you’ll know that this village also goes by the name of “Storybrooke” in the popular TV show. Follow the steps of Emma, Henry, the Evil Queen and many other characters using the Once Upon a Time walking map, which you can purchase in the Tourism Richmond Visitor Centre. Maybe you will see Rumpelstiltskin on the streets!
