Natural Capital Exhibit Opening – April 8th, 2013
Come explore the true value of nature’s benefits, what they mean to you, and how you can help protect nature and its servicesā¦
The Gulf of Georgia Cannery is pleased to host theĀ second edition of National Capital, an exhibit curated and created by Emily Carr University of Art and Design students, in partnership with the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF), and in collaboration with the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto.
The NATURAL CAPITAL project involves post-secondary art students, across a range of artistic disciplines and levels, applying their artistic and teamwork skills to provide a creative service to the David Suzuki Foundation (DSF) and, consequently, the broader community in terms of supporting strategic and engaging public education around valuing and protecting the āNatural Capitalā (economic value of ecosystem services) provided by eight beaches in Metro Vancouver.
This interactive community mapping & storytelling project includes a series of 8 digital narratives (by ECUADās āCommunity Projectsā students) that bring to life research DSF recently launched on the āNatural Capitalā aquatic assets in BCās Lower Mainland region, while digging into the meaning this has for people in their day-to-day lives. The study estimates the regionās wetlands, beaches and coastal areas provide at least $30 billion in economic benefits to residents every year.
These digital narratives feature stories from diverse community members who, by sharing their unique relationships with or expertise on 8 specific beaches in Metro Vancouver, highlight the priceless and often lesser known ecosystem services (ie. flood control, habitat, spiritual, educational, cultural, etc) that beaches provide. These videos will be integrated into DSFās web-based Natural Capital Map Application.
In an attempt to address todayās growing nature-deficit-disorder, this exhibit also offers visitors an immersive virtual beach experience through a video installation with panoramic images and sound walks of the beaches featured in the projectās digital narratives.
The exhibit launch will take place on Monday, April 8th, 2013, from 6pm to 9pm, at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and will include some exciting guest speakers, a screening of the videos, and an artistsā talk by students whose work is featured in the project. Admission is free and is open to the public.
National Capital is on view at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery from April 8th, 2013 until August 2013.
